Let's
Fight
Tribalism
and
Corruption
for
a
Transparent
Managment Mrs.
Mariam
FONDGENYUY,
G.B.H.S.
Bamenda Bamenda, 3rd May 2001 Dear
Friends, Tribes
are
groups
of
people
with
the
same
language,
ancestors
and
customs.
Thus
tribalism
is
the
exaltation
of
that
tribe
above
other
groups. Corruption
is
to
alter
from
the
original
through
bribery.
In
this
case
money
is
used
to
coerce
people
to
grant
us
favours
they
would
normally
not
carry
out. Applying
these
terms
to
education
is
a
story
that
involves
the
whole
society
thus
making
it
more
intricate.
The
family
of
education
is
made
up
of
curricula. The
Administration,
teacher,
students/parents.
This
is
a
chain
type
of
relationship
and
as
such
it
is
very
difficult
to
set
out
boundaries. Tribalism
as
defined
above
is
very
seriously
embedded
in
our
education
system. Administration
:
In
Cameroon
there
is
what
is
often
referred
to
as
the
“sons/daughters
of
the
soil
syndrome”.
Appointments
to
positions
of
responsibility
in
government
schools
are
based
on
your
tribe
of
origin
and
your
political
affiliation.
No
matter
your
qualification,
if
you
are
not
son/daughter
of
the
soil
“Ashia”.
This
can
be
seen
right
from
the
Appointments
of
Ministers
where
each
appointment
is
followed
by
village
feast,
where
each
appointee
pledges
to
defend
the
interest
of
the
tribe
in
all
circumstances
and
thus
his
appointment
is
reduced
to
tribal
level. On
appointments
of
principals
Principals
:
Owe
allegiance
to
no
one
else
apart
from
to
his
tribesman
who
placed
him
there.
The
“son
of
the
soil
syndrome”
dominates,
competence,
efficiency
etc. Teachers
teach
children
who
eventually
lord
it
over
them
as
principals
simply
because
they
are
sons
of
the
soil. Principals
reserve
a
quota
for
admissions
for
members
of
his
tribe. Teachers
too
are
guilty
of
practising
tribalism.
If
you
are
the
teacher
who
tricks
names
of
children
of
your
tribe,
on
a
class
list
so
as
to
favour
them
then
you
are
tribalistic. If
you
are
the
teacher
who
goes
to
your
tribal
meeting
groups
and
tell
them
that
if
you
are
there
their
children
should
not
fail
exams,
then
you
are
tribalistic
because
you’ll
give
marks
that
they
do
not
deserve. If
you
are
the
type
of
teacher
who
gossips
to
the
head
teacher
about
other
teacher
in
your
“country
talk”
simply
because
they
do
not
come
from
the
same
tribe
like
you
then
you
are
tribalistic. Children/parents If
you
have
your
child
admitted
in
a
school
on
tribal
links
then
you
are
tribalistic
and
teaching
your
child
to
do
the
same. Corruption
–Refers
to
bribery
to
obtain
favours. Administration
:
Do
you
get
bribes
for
admissions
that
are
supposed
to
be
free
because
that
money
must
be
used
to
strengthen
and
positions. Are
you
the
kind
of
parent
who
knows
that
you
have
a
weak
candidate
but
is
ready,
to
bribe
the
principal
to
do
the
impossible. Teachers:
Do
you
merit
your
qualification
or
you
had
it
through
a
fraudulent
means
i.e.
He
will
Parents
:
If
you
let
your
children
get
into
schools
and
go
through
them
using
unorthodox
methods
to
pass
exam
e.g.
buying
leaked
questions
for
them
what
heritage
are
we
bequeathing
to
them. Recommendations
